Sweet Heat Philly Cheesesteak

Sweet Heat Philly Cheesesteak

Teriyaki-Pineapple Spicy Sauce:

  1. Ingredients:

    • 1 cup teriyaki sauce
    • 1 cup pineapple juice
    • 1 small pineapple, finely chopped
    • 2-3 tablespoons honey or brown sugar
    • 1-2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes (adjust to your heat preference)
    • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • Optional: 1 tablespoon cornstarch dissolved in 2 tablespoons water (for thickening)
  2. Instructions:

    1. Combine teriyaki sauce, pineapple juice, chopped pineapple, honey/brown sugar, red pepper flakes, ginger, and garlic in a saucepan.
    2. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
    3. If you prefer a thicker sauce, add the cornstarch-water mixture and stir until the sauce thickens.
    4. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly before using.

Cheese Recommendations:

  • Provolone: This cheese melts well and has a mild, slightly sweet flavor that complements the teriyaki and pineapple.
  • Gouda: Smoked gouda can add a nice depth with its rich and slightly nutty flavor.
  • Pepper Jack: For an extra kick of heat and a creamy melt.

Onions and Peppers:

  • Onions: Thinly slice red onions for a bit of sharpness, or caramelize yellow onions for sweetness.
  • Peppers: Use bell peppers for sweetness or jalapeños for more heat. Sauté them lightly to bring out their flavor.

Modified Philly Cheesesteak with Teriyaki-Pineapple Sauce:

Ingredients:

  • Thinly sliced beef steak (such as ribeye or sirloin)
  • Provolone cheese (melts well and has a mild flavor that won't overpower the sauce)
  • Teriyaki-Pineapple Spicy Sauce (recipe as mentioned earlier)
  • Onions and bell peppers, thinly sliced (caramelized onions would be great here)
  • Optional: Jalapeños or chili peppers for extra heat
  • Hoagie rolls or similar long sandwich rolls

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Steak:

    • Season the steak slices with salt and pepper.
    • In a hot skillet, cook the steak until it's browned to your liking. Set aside.
  2. Sauté Vegetables:

    • In the same skillet, add a bit of oil if needed, and sauté the onions and bell peppers until they are soft. If using jalapeños, add them towards the end.
  3. Prepare the Sauce:

    • Follow the earlier recipe for the Teriyaki-Pineapple Spicy Sauce. Keep it warm.
  4. Assemble the Sandwich:

    • Open the hoagie rolls and layer in the cooked steak and sautéed vegetables.
    • Drizzle generously with the teriyaki-pineapple sauce.
    • Top the steak and vegetables with slices of Provolone cheese (or a mix of Provolone and Pepper Jack for extra heat).
    • Place the sandwich open-faced under a broiler for a minute or two, just until the cheese melts and gets bubbly.
  • Finish and Serve:
    • Once the cheese is melted, remove the sandwiches from the oven.
    • Optionally, drizzle a bit more of the teriyaki-pineapple sauce on top for extra flavor.
    • Close the sandwiches and serve hot!
